I am so proud of my client, Glynis Wright & Co, who recently won ‘The Best Team’ award at the Leicester Mercury Business Awards. Glynis Wright & Co. is a niche, highly specialist family law and mediation practice based in Leicester city centre. It is a one stop shop for all family law matters and the fastest growing family law practice in Leicester. I’ve been working for 6 months to support the practice as it grows, to ensure that it maintains it’s current culture of collaboration, cohesion, and client focus. Without a high level of effective teamwork, this business would not be achieving the fantastic results it’s getting.

So, how do you achieve this ‘synergy’?

Crisis often leads to unity

Over the years, I have found that effective teamwork tends to happen in short bursts. Often, the best teamwork happens when people are facing a crisis because they must come together quickly to achieve common objectives to ensure either their own, or someone else’s survival. For example – volunteers helping other human beings who are in grave danger will work together as a unit to deal with a catastrophe. In the heat of the moment, their own individual needs are not important because they are fully focused on working together to save lives. Although this is an extreme situation, often in business, it’s not until a crisis occurs that people start working well together. This is human nature; our ability to ‘survive’ the situation that lies ahead.

The 5 key elements of teamwork

People do not necessarily need to like one another, but they do need to respect each other, and an effective team also needs the 5 following elements:

  • 100% commitment – members of an effective team need to be fully committed to each other before they are committed to a common objective
  • Communication – being open, direct, and honest will help to build trust within the team and, over time, camaraderie as mutual respect grows within the team
  • Disagreement - team members need to be able to disagree with each other without this resulting in an extended conflict situation
  • Make decisions - by consensus and not by majority; good outcomes don’t always happen by simply ‘voting’ for a solution. Solutions need to be discussed openly and the resulting decision needs the ‘buy in’ of all team members
  • Be empowered - every team member needs to feel fully empowered if they are going to work together in a cohesive manner. People need to feel as if they have the authority or power to influence a decision – this creates buy in
